Why You Should Create A Brand Board + FREE Illustrator Template!

Why You Should Create A Brand Board + FREE Illustrator Template!

The WHY

"I have already created all the individual pieces of my own/clients branding, why do I need to present a brandboard?"

If you are asking this, then it is an excellent question! A Brand Board is your final collection of fonts, color, and patterns that are curated into a board that represents your new/refreshed brand as a whole. They are a great way to showcase a brand, and help the viewer to get an all round picture of your style and aesthetic. A brand board can include content like sumark and alternative logo designs, placements, images, iconography and more! Sometimes a brand board will be elaborated on further into more of a brand guideline book for larger companies, but often a one-page document is perfect for a blog or small business to quickly refer back to for style guidelines.

Here's what I include in my brand boards:

  1. Main/primary logo.
  2. Logo variation
This is another version of the main logo, with a slight difference. It could be a vertical version, it could have a shape around it, it could be in another color, or it could be textured...
  3. Sub mark
A sub mark is usually another smaller abbreviated element that is pulled from the main logo, and often used as a favicon or profile picture.
  4. Main color palette
  5. Patterns / Iconography / Graphic Elements
Any other supporting graphics like these that add to the overall branding.
  6. Fonts
  7. Moodboard with imagery

The HOW

After you have finalised all your design assets from your branding project, start compiling them all onto this one brand board template to showcase your brand as a whole. If you need a smaller file size, you could save your logos etc as pngs and add them to the board, but personally I prefer to work with the original vectors just incase I need to tweak the sizes/alignment etc.

Personalising the Brand Board Template

So let's get started! Download the Brand Board Illustrator Template and use this step by step guide to personalise it to your own branding.

Use these steps:

  1. If you want the original font used in the board, download Montserrat free from FontSquirrel
  2. Download the Brand Board Illustrator Template
  3. Open in Adobe Illustrator
  4. Begin adding your own branding elements to the board, starting with your Primary Logo, Logo Variation/Alternatives, and Submark
  5. Next, add your own colour palette by using the ink dropper to change the circles above Colour Palette
  6. Add your Hex value (example #E29CB1) below the circles
  7. Handy tip - Use Coolors to find the name of your colour, and go to Settings (little cog) to toggle on the Secondary Information to see the RGB codes
  8. Next, add your own font selections, and you could also add where they can be downloaded from
  9. On the left side panel, there is room for Iconography and Patterns, but feel free to add whatever elements are applicable to your own brand
  10. Finally, to edit the moodboard at the bottom, copy and paste your imagery in, and one by one send your images to the back of the grey boxes, making sure they are just slightly bigger than the width and height of the grey box
  11. Once you have done this, one by one select an image + the box on top, right-click and select Make Clipping Mask
  12. To edit the image within the clipping mask, simply double or triple click into the box and change the image size or paste in different one
  13. For more help with Clipping Masks, see Y Designs tutorial
  14. To export your brandboard, go to File > Export > Export for Screens > Change name of the artboard on left to whatever you want the file to be called, select where you want it to be exported to (little folder icon), set the Format to 72ppi PNG for a smaller web size, or around 150ppi for a higher-res version
Download Brand Board Template

And you have now created a fully personalised brand board that you can use over and over again! Let me know in the comments below if you found this helpful, and if you want to see any other templates created to download :)

SHOWCASE โ€” Finally sharing the absolutely stunning @therosebowman website + branding designs ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿงก Itโ€™s so hard to fit the visuals into just a few squares so please check out the real life site www.rosebowman.com to see Roseโ€™s amazing work!
โ€”
Rose is an destination wedding and elopement photographer based in Atlanta and ready to travel! Her photography style is just beautiful and her values and messaging really give you a great idea of what Rose is all about and who she loves to work with, and what itโ€™s like working with her. We wanted a warm, friendly boho vibe with a professional edge that would be timeless and give a nod to travel and adventure as well.
โ€”
We used this to give her branding and visual style such a personal touch and weaved in a lot of graphic elements to add a layered look. Each graphic has a special link to Rose and I love that we were able to personalise them in this way, and also utilise a warm and boho colour palette to give them even more life and movement. The logo itself utilises unique typography mixed with little wanderlust touches like compass arrows and dots
โ€”
The website itself is packed with a tonne of custom features, my favourite being the little back to top arrow as well as the testimonial carousel ๐Ÿ˜‹
โ€”
This project was such a blast! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป
Day 3 #JMXMAS โ€” My favourite passion project at the end of the year ๐Ÿ˜‹ calendars! I am so happy to share the new large format A3/A2 year wall calendar in black and white ๐Ÿฅณ
โ€”
I wanted to revamp the design entirely this year to something I hadnโ€™t seen before, and I just love the modern, luxe minimalist look ๐Ÿงก just perfect to frame and put up on the wall
โ€”
These are now available on @etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/744528626/2020-yearly-calendar-a3-a2-2020-calendar?ref=shop_home_active_2
โ€”
Do you have a passion project you are working on right now, or a favourite thing to design that isnโ€™t necessarily part of your core services? Iโ€™d love to hear! ๐Ÿฅฐ
HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS โ€” and also I donโ€™t know who needs to hear this, but remember to take a break (me included ๐Ÿคฃ)
โ€”
Donโ€™t feel guilty, donโ€™t think about the things you think you need to be doing, just remember at some point this silly season to take a break and do whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed and recharge a bit. Shut down the computer (for once this year, it needs a break and an update too ๐Ÿ˜…), turn off those emails, set the standard that you are not a machine and that you deserve an hour, day, a week to yourself and to spend with loved ones, friends and family. You canโ€™t pour from an empty cup and all that ๐Ÿ˜˜
โ€”
And just reminder for my own studio holiday hours - I am now out of office until January 13 and will only be checking emails very rarely, and priority will go to to those Iโ€™ve already discussed projects with or am in discussion with. Any new projects unfortunately will be discussed when I get back in 2020. Iโ€™ll still be active on Insta though most likely as itโ€™s my time to just have fun on the gram and take it into holiday mode ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿพโœจ
SHOWCASE โ€” Itโ€™s also going to be about 12 days of showcases hehe because Iโ€™ve had so many amazing projects wrap up and some awesome clients launching just in time for #christmas ๐Ÿ˜‹
โ€”
This is the gorgeous @squarespace site for @veronikamoreira_beauty. My jaw dropped when I saw her amazing work and knew we just had to highlight it as much as possible, ensuring imagery took centre stage throughout the design. We also worked with high end and editorial style typography to compliment all the visuals ๐Ÿ˜
โ€”
@veronikamoreira_beauty was such a pleasure to work with, totally committed to the project and getting me absolutely everything I needed to bring her vision to life on the site. โ€”
My favourite part of this site would have to be the stunning homepage image slideshow as well as the fonts used - just so professional! ๐Ÿฅฐ
โ€”
Stay tuned for more showcase features, there are going to be a few hehe!
DAY 2 #JMXMAS โ€” A year in review โ˜บ๏ธ I kept seeing checklists for the year ahead or for the end of year, so I wanted to do something a little bit different with a focus on reflecting on the year that has been 2019 ๐Ÿ—“
โ€”
Iโ€™ve also written a wee blog blog reviewing my year and would so love to hear some of your answers to these prompts.
โ€”
And for the second day of #Christmas (Iโ€™m so out of whack with the days hehe please excuse me), Iโ€™ve created my very first @canva templates of the actual graphics in this post if you wanted to share your own 2019 review! ๐Ÿฅณ They can also be used on Ps as well. Itโ€™s taken me so long to branch into this particular platform because of the sharing issues, but I think Iโ€™ve finally got that covered. You can purchase the templates on @creativemarket, just follow the link in bio!
โ€”
Hope you are all having a very merry holiday season so far, and remember to reflect on your year and celebrate those wins, and learn from those lows! ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿงก
DAY 1 #JMXMAS โ€” New A4 Monthly Calendars now up on the @etsy shop ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ—“ This is a digital download so you can print it at home or at a professional printer and display it any what you might like!
โ€”
Super minimalist and functional this year with plenty of space to write down any dates, jot down any to-dos as well as a page at the start and end for planning the years goals ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ˜‹
โ€”
Now that I have (mostly) finished up with client work, Iโ€™m settling into biz admin, replying to emails and finally getting some resources out. I thought Iโ€™d do a bit of a 12 days of #Christmas schedule to keep an eye out for some more exciting free and purchasable resources!
